Four days for a couple who want both Dubais — the gold-glass futurist city of the Burj Khalifa and the wooden-dhow trading port of the spice souk, separated by 200m of creek and 60 years. Day 1 is the modern showstopper: Burj observation deck, the world's largest mall, the choreographed fountain show below. Day 2 crosses to Bur Dubai for the Al Fahidi historic neighborhood, the abra (small wooden ferry) ride, and the gold and spice souks where you'll bargain for saffron worth twice as much in your home country. Day 3 disappears into the desert — dune-bashing 4x4, sunset over the dunes, henna and Arabic coffee under the stars. Day 4 is for the Palm Jumeirah — Atlantis, the View at the Palm, and a Marina sunset before flight. Dubai isn't subtle; that's the appeal.

   The 'At the Top SKY' ticket ($150) is the splurge — 148th floor at 555m, an outdoor observation terrace (sky air is breezy at this height, jackets recommended even in summer), private lounge with refreshments, fast-track elevator. The standard 'At the Top' ticket ($55) gets you 124th floor only — the view is 90% the same, but no outdoor terrace. Time it for sunset (book an entry slot 30 min before sunset on your day's date). Photos work better from 124th than 148th oddly — closer to building details below.

   1,200 stores under one roof. The Aquarium (free to view from outside, $40 to walk through) has the world's largest acrylic viewing panel. The Olympic-size ice rink in the middle is surreal in 35°C Dubai. The 'Gold Souk Extension' on level 1 has the modern gold trade. Don't try to shop everything — pick 2-3 stores you care about, then drift through the Dancing Fountains promenade exit toward the lake.

Try the 'Reif Japanese Kitchen' uni rice bowl, the 'Pickl' burger (Dubai's most-loved smash burger), and the 'Bait Maryam' Lebanese mezze. Outdoor terrace seats face the Burj — you eat with the show.

   30-acre choreographed fountain in the lake at the base of the Burj — water jets shoot up to 150m, choreographed to Arabic, Bollywood, and pop tracks. Free, runs every 30 min from 18:00 to 23:00. Best viewing spots: the bridge between the mall and Souk Al Bahar (ground level, you feel the spray), or the Address Downtown's lakefront terrace (elevated, you see the Burj behind it). Each show is a different song; stay for two.

   Cocktail bar on the 63rd floor — Burj Khalifa fills the entire window-wall, lit at night. The Address staff knows the fountain show schedule — sit in time for the 22:00 finale.

The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding does an excellent walking tour ($20, 1.5 hours) with traditional Emirati breakfast included — book 1 day ahead at culturalfoundation.ae. The Coffee Museum and the Coin Museum are small free side-stops. Total contrast to Day 1.

   The single most charming experience in modern Dubai — a 1-AED ride (yes, 27 cents) on a 1950s-style wooden boat across the creek to the Deira side. Departs the Bur Dubai abra dock continuously, leaves when full (5 min wait). 23 passengers, captain steering with a wooden tiller. Cool breeze across the creek even in summer. Pay cash to the captain after boarding.

   The Spice Souk first (smaller, more pleasant) — saffron at $4/gram (vs $12 at home), zaatar by the kilo, frankincense resin, dried rose petals for tea. The Gold Souk after — 380 retailers selling 18-22-24 karat gold by weight (current spot price + a small craftsmanship fee). Even non-buyers should walk through; it's THE Dubai photo. Don't take photos of female shoppers without permission. Bargain 15-20% off marked prices in spice souk; gold is fixed-price by weight.

If that's too much, Pierchic is the elegant alternative — modern seafood at the end of a wooden boardwalk over the Arabian Gulf, half the price, same view of Burj Al Arab in the distance. Two big-ticket attractions: (a) Aquaventure waterpark — slides, lazy river, and the 'Leap of Faith' near-vertical drop slide; full-day pass $90/person, recommended for water lovers. (b) The Lost Chambers Aquarium — walk-through 65,000-fish aquarium, $40/person, cooler if you want a 90-minute experience. Save the waterpark for a longer trip; Lost Chambers is right-sized for a half-day.

Daytime is fine; evening is also dramatic but the Palm doesn't light up the way Downtown does at night.
