Dubai — 4-day itinerary

Sample plan

Dubai

4-day itinerary · United Arab Emirates

Crafted for the two of you

Four days for a couple who want both Dubais — the gold-glass futurist city of the Burj Khalifa and the wooden-dhow trading port of the spice souk, separated by 200m of creek and 60 years. Day 1 is the modern showstopper: Burj observation deck, the world's largest mall, the choreographed fountain show below. Day 2 crosses to Bur Dubai for the Al Fahidi historic neighborhood, the abra (small wooden ferry) ride, and the gold and spice souks where you'll bargain for saffron worth twice as much in your home country. Day 3 disappears into the desert — dune-bashing 4x4, sunset over the dunes, henna and Arabic coffee under the stars. Day 4 is for the Palm Jumeirah — Atlantis, the View at the Palm, and a Marina sunset before flight. Dubai isn't subtle; that's the appeal.

Stay

Address Downtown Dubai

Downtown Dubai, opposite Burj Khalifa · Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai

~$320/night

The Address Downtown is directly on the Burj Lake — your room has a Burj Khalifa view and you watch the Dubai Fountain show 8 times an evening from your balcony. Dubai Mall is connected by a private bridge (5-min covered walk), Burj Khalifa is across the lake, the metro Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station is 10 min on foot. Three pools, an excellent breakfast buffet, the rooftop Neos cocktail bar on the 63rd floor. Rooms run $400+/night in peak season but drop to $280 in shoulder months and weekends; book through Marriott Bonvoy if you have status.

Airport → Stay

Dubai Metro Red Line (DXB Terminal 1/3 → Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall) or taxi

~45 min metro / ~25 min taxi · ~$3 metro / ~$22 taxi

From DXB, the Metro Red Line is shockingly easy — Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 each have a station inside the airport. Buy a 'Nol Red Ticket' from the kiosk (10 AED for unlimited day on Red Line). Ride 25 min to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, then 10 min walk to the hotel through the cooled walkway. With heavy luggage or after midnight, a taxi from the official rank ($22 metered, ~25 min) is friction-free. Avoid 'limo' touts inside the terminal — they charge 3x the metered rate. Uber and Careem also work but with peak-hour surge are similar to taxi cost. Drinking water is free at every metro station.

Reserve airport transfer

Trip essentials

Currency
Emirati Dirham (AED). 3.67 AED ≈ 1 USD (pegged). Cards everywhere — Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Amex. Keep ~200 AED cash for taxis (some still cash-only), souk bargaining, and the abra ride (1 AED per crossing — only paper notes accepted at the dock). The Dubai Mall has currency-exchange kiosks with better rates than airport for cash.
Language
Arabic is official; English is universal in tourist areas, hotels, restaurants, taxis. 'Shukran' (shoo-kran) = thank you. 'Sabah al-khayr' = good morning. Menu mostly in English at modern places, English+Arabic at souks. Google Maps in Arabic for street names is useful in old areas. South Asian languages (Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog) are also widely spoken — the workforce is multinational.
Emergency
999 (police, English fluent), 998 (ambulance), 997 (fire)

Day 1

Modern Dubai showstopper

Land, settle in, climb the Burj for the highest urban view on earth, browse the world's largest mall, watch the fountain show from the lake — Dubai 101 in one afternoon and evening.

    Address Downtown check-in

    Downtown Dubai

Drop bags, request a Burj Khalifa-view room (request, don't assume — 'fountain view' is the upgrade phrase that often gets you both). Welcome dates and Arabic coffee in the lobby. The pool deck has 270° Burj views if you want a 30-min reset before going out.

  2. 15:00

    sight

5 min walk via Dubai Mall connection

Burj Khalifa — At the Top SKY (148th floor)

    Burj Khalifa

The 'At the Top SKY' ticket ($150) is the splurge — 148th floor at 555m, an outdoor observation terrace (sky air is breezy at this height, jackets recommended even in summer), private lounge with refreshments, fast-track elevator. The standard 'At the Top' ticket ($55) gets you 124th floor only — the view is 90% the same, but no outdoor terrace. Time it for sunset (book an entry slot 30 min before sunset on your day's date). Photos work better from 124th than 148th oddly — closer to building details below.

    1.5 hours · ~$150/person SKY (or $55 standard)

Tip: Book at burjkhalifa.ae 2 weeks ahead — sunset slots sell out fast. Or use the hotel's same-day reservation channel (Address Downtown gets allocated SKY entries).

  3. 17:00

    shopping

    Built-in (mall connects to Burj)

Dubai Mall — Aquarium, ice rink, gold souk extension

    Inside Dubai Mall

1,200 stores under one roof. The Aquarium (free to view from outside, $40 to walk through) has the world's largest acrylic viewing panel. The Olympic-size ice rink in the middle is surreal in 35°C Dubai. The 'Gold Souk Extension' on level 1 has the modern gold trade. Don't try to shop everything — pick 2-3 stores you care about, then drift through the Dancing Fountains promenade exit toward the lake.

  4. 19:00

    meal

Time Out Market Dubai (food hall)

Souk Al Bahar (across the lake)

17 of Dubai's best chefs in one open-plan food hall on the second floor of Souk Al Bahar — directly opposite the Burj Khalifa across the fountain lake. Dishes from $12–25 each, you can order from multiple stalls and share. Try the 'Reif Japanese Kitchen' uni rice bowl, the 'Pickl' burger (Dubai's most-loved smash burger), and the 'Bait Maryam' Lebanese mezze. Outdoor terrace seats face the Burj — you eat with the show.

    activity

    Walk 5 min to bridge

    Dubai Fountain show

    Burj Lake

30-acre choreographed fountain in the lake at the base of the Burj — water jets shoot up to 150m, choreographed to Arabic, Bollywood, and pop tracks. Free, runs every 30 min from 18:00 to 23:00. Best viewing spots: the bridge between the mall and Souk Al Bahar (ground level, you feel the spray), or the Address Downtown's lakefront terrace (elevated, you see the Burj behind it). Each show is a different song; stay for two.

Cocktail bar on the 63rd floor — Burj Khalifa fills the entire window-wall, lit at night. Cocktails $30 each (Dubai is dry-friendly but alcohol prices are steep — only licensed venues, all hotel-attached). Order the 'Persian Garden' (rosewater + saffron + gin). Smart-casual dress code. The Address staff knows the fountain show schedule — sit in time for the 22:00 finale.

  2. 10:45

    sight

    10 min walk from station

    Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood

    Bur Dubai

Dubai's oldest standing district — coral-block houses with wind towers (the original air conditioning, 1850s), narrow sand-floor lanes, traditional bait al-fahidi (Fahidi house) at center. The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding does an excellent walking tour ($20, 1.5 hours) with traditional Emirati breakfast included — book 1 day ahead at culturalfoundation.ae. The Coffee Museum and the Coin Museum are small free side-stops. Total contrast to Day 1.

  3. 12:30

5 min walk to Bur Dubai dock

    Abra (small wooden ferry) crossing

    Dubai Creek

The single most charming experience in modern Dubai — a 1-AED ride (yes, 27 cents) on a 1950s-style wooden boat across the creek to the Deira side. Departs the Bur Dubai abra dock continuously, leaves when full (5 min wait). 23 passengers, captain steering with a wooden tiller. Cool breeze across the creek even in summer. Pay cash to the captain after boarding.

    shopping

5 min walk from Deira abra dock

Spice Souk + Gold Souk (Deira)

    Deira side of the creek

The Spice Souk first (smaller, more pleasant) — saffron at $4/gram (vs $12 at home), zaatar by the kilo, frankincense resin, dried rose petals for tea. The Gold Souk after — 380 retailers selling 18-22-24 karat gold by weight (current spot price + a small craftsmanship fee). Even non-buyers should walk through; it's THE Dubai photo. Don't take photos of female shoppers without permission. Bargain 15-20% off marked prices in spice souk; gold is fixed-price by weight.

Tip: Earlier (10am) is calmer; afternoon brings Indian + Filipino shoppers and energy doubles.

  5. 14:30

    meal

Abra back to Bur Dubai (1 AED)

Bait Al Wakeel — lunch on the creek

    Bur Dubai (back across)

Dubai's first restaurant (1935), built directly over the creek on wooden stilts — you eat with abras passing under you. Emirati-Iranian seafood: grilled hammour ($28), shawarma plate, machboos rice. Lunch with 1930s wood-walled charm and creek breeze. Take another abra back across after eating.

    1.5 hours · ~$70 for two

Tip: Reserve at zomato.com 1 day ahead — terrace tables face the creek.

  6. 16:30

    rest

    Metro back, 30 min

    Hotel break + Address pool

    Address Downtown

Old Dubai is dusty + warm even in winter; an afternoon at the Address pool (270° Burj view) is the perfect mid-trip reset. Order a rosewater + lemonade; the pool butler exists and brings it. Shower properly before dinner — Dubai sand gets everywhere.

Al Mahara at Burj Al Arab (or Pierchic alternative)

    Jumeirah

If you want the once-in-a-trip dinner — Al Mahara inside the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, around a 3-story floor-to-ceiling aquarium. Tasting menu $250+/person, dress code is full smart (jacket for men). If that's too much, Pierchic is the elegant alternative — modern seafood at the end of a wooden boardwalk over the Arabian Gulf, half the price, same view of Burj Al Arab in the distance. Either is the photo of the trip.

    2 hours · ~$300/person Al Mahara, ~$120 Pierchic

Tip: Burj Al Arab requires a 2-week booking + dress code adherence; Pierchic accepts 3-day-ahead bookings.

(b) The Lost Chambers Aquarium — walk-through 65,000-fish aquarium, $40/person, cooler if you want a 90-minute experience. Daytime is fine; evening is also dramatic but the Palm doesn't light up the way Downtown does at night.

Did you know?

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque holds the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, woven by 1,300 weavers over two years.

Practical info

Budget: ~$400–700/day for a couple excluding hotel (Dubai is expensive: $50 mall lunch, $35 cocktails, $200+ tasting menus; the desert safari is the biggest single cost)

Best season

November through March is the only sane time — daytime 22–28°C, evenings cool. April starts the heat ramp; May–September is genuinely dangerous (45°C+, locals shift indoors entirely, outdoor activities are early-morning only). Ramadan dates shift each year — a lovely month culturally (iftars in Old Dubai are extraordinary) but daytime restaurants are restricted, alcohol service is reduced, dress codes tighten. Check the year's Ramadan dates before booking. Friday is the holiday in UAE (Saturday is partial); museums and souks shift Friday hours, so plan around it.

Packing

  • · Light layers — daytime 26°C, malls/restaurants AC at 18°C, contrast is sharp
  • · Modest cover-ups for women in souks and Old Dubai (knees + shoulders covered) — not enforced strictly but more comfortable
  • · Sunglasses + hat — UV is strong even in winter
  • · Sandals + closed-toe walking shoes (sand getting into open shoes during desert safari is real)
  • · Swimwear — pool culture is huge
  • · Smart-casual outfit — at least one for the Burj Al Arab/Pierchic dinner (jacket for men)
  • · Reusable water bottle — refill stations at metro and malls
  • · Power adapter Type G (UK-style 3-pin)
Find on Amazon

Tips

  • · Public displays of affection beyond hand-holding are technically illegal — discreet is the norm
  • · Alcohol only at hotel-licensed venues; carrying alcohol on the street is illegal — taxi between hotel and dinner
  • · Friday is the religious day — souks open later (after 16:00), some museums closed
  • · Tipping: 10–15% at restaurants if not auto-included; 5–10 AED for taxi rounds; $20+ for tour guide
  • · Metro is excellent and cheap; avoid taxis in peak traffic (16:30–19:00) — Sheikh Zayed Road becomes a parking lot
  • · Ramadan rules (if applicable to your dates): no public eating/drinking 0530–1830 in non-tourist areas; tourist hotels exempt
  • · Drone flying is restricted; always ask before photographing women, government buildings, military
  • · VAT refund: 5% refundable on purchases over 250 AED at participating stores — process at DXB before security
